The Polar Explorer workshop serves as a fascinating and in-depth introduction to the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and is ideal for any Key Stage 2 class or year group studying the polar regions.  For example, it is particularly well suited to those schools covering topics such as Poles Apart, Frozen Kingdom or Pole to Pole.

Over the course of the day, pupils spend time exploring the polar environment; the climate; the people; the wildlife; the effects of climate change; past and present explorers such as Scott and Shackleton; the hazards of polar travel; and the equipment needed to survive in such an inhospitable location (including a session where three or four pupils get to dress up in genuine polar explorer clothing).

Some of the questions addressed during a Polar Explorer workshop include:

  • Why are the icecaps melting?

  • What do I do if I meet a polar bear?

  • What exactly is frostbite?

  • Why don’t penguins’ feet freeze to the ice?

  • Captain Scott or Ernest Shackleton?

  • The Arctic and Antarctica: the same or different?

  • How do you actually build an igloo?

  • How many pairs of gloves do I need?

  • Why are walruses so fat?

  • How do you go to the toilet at -4O°C?

  • Why don’t I need my raincoat?

  • What exactly causes the Northern Lights?
