The Maya Explorer workshop provides awe-inspiring content for Key Stage 2 year groups studying the Maya Civilisation, Mexico or the rainforests of Central America.

During the workshop, pupils spend time investigating the reality of living in the Central American rainforest, exploring subjects such as the tropical climate; the vast array of wildlife and plant life; and the potential hazards that await would-be explorers.

They then move on to look at the Maya Civilisation in detail, dissecting the Maya’s rainforest-based way of life and exploring their highly advanced culture, their rise and their fall, their architectural achievements, their often strange-looking appearance and their infamously bloodthirsty rituals and sacrificial practices.

Some of the questions tackled during a Maya Explorer workshop include:

  • Did the Maya invent football?

  • Big noses, crossed eyes, tattoos and tongue piercings? What were they thinking?

  • Was there really a Maya god of sweetcorn?

  • How do you build a city in the middle of the jungle?

  • What exactly is a bloodletting ritual?

  • Why do howler monkeys howl?

  • Hieroglyphs and emojis: is there any difference?

  • Where are the Maya now?

  • What does a tropical flesh-eating disease actually look like?
